Renewal of the Aalto University identity management system
The Aalto University identity management (IdM) system is being renewed. The first phase of the new system will be taken into use probably in early February. In this phase, the current identity management system will be replaced and the user account creation and password reset processes will change.
For current users the most visible change will be the renewal of the password management service (password.aalto.fi). The new password.aalto.fi service will enable self-service to password reset also for people without Finnish personal identity codes using the personal email address and mobile number recorded in the HR system or student register.
The old functionality to reset a password using Finnish bank codes, mobile certificate or ID card will be moved to the new identity management portal (idm.aalto.fi). The identity management portal will also allow users to update work contact information.
The biggest change for new users is that the new IdM system will first create a digital Aalto identity based on personal data recorded in the HR or student register and send an invitation to activate the identity to the user’s personal email after the creation of the digital identity. As with the password reset the activation can be done either by the old way using Finnish bank codes, mobile certificate or ID card or using personal email and mobile phone for verification. The actual user account will be created within a few minutes after the successful activation of the identity. This enables foreign users to get their user account more easily than before.
In the second phase of the renewal project the application of the access rights and other identity related services will be introduced to the new identity management portal. These changes will be taken into use during 2019.
When the system is deployed, user instructions will be published at Aalto IT Help (it.aalto.fi).
