Servers for light-duty calculation

There are two Ubuntu general servers available for light-duty calculation, brute.aalto.fi and force.aalto.fi, each of which has 256 GB of memory and 16 cores. The servers can run processes that last for several days, such as light-duty calculation.

The servers are primarily intended for study and course use. For heavy-duty calculation and calculation related to research we recommend using, for instance, the Triton service by Aalto University School of Science (http://science-it.aalto.fi/) or CSC’s calculation services (http://www.csc.fi).

Mathematical software has been removed from the Kosh and Lyta general servers, and it is prohibited to perform calculation or run heavy processes on them. The administrator can interrupt any processes on these general servers that disturb other users.

All commercial activities (such as mining of electronic currencies) by using light-duty calculation servers is prohibited.

Aalto IT does not coordinate the running of calculation processes between different individuals, so all users are simultaneously responsible for the server’s workload. The administrator can stop calculation processes if they cause significant disruption to the operation of the server. Such cases include, e.g., using up all the memory of the server and causing a significant IO load. Any processes that clearly disrupt the operation of the service can be stopped; the intention is to send a message of this to the user afterwards.
