Activating a user ID

Every student and employee at Aalto University is provided with an Aalto University user ID. You will receive an invitation email when your digital identity is created. You need to active your digital identity to get the user ID and password. With the user ID, you can log in to Aalto’s information systems and use the internal services of the university. You can activate the user ID either in the Self-service Portal at https://password.aalto.fi or by visiting the customer service desk of Aalto University’s IT Services.

You must not make your personal username or password available to others. You are responsible for all use of your username and password. The policy governing the use of Aalto University’s information systems (hereafter the ‘Policy’) applies to all members of the Aalto University community, and it is applied to all information systems, and use thereof, which are in the university’s possession or otherwise at the responsibility of the university.

Activating the user ID in the Self-service Portal

You can activate the user ID in the self-service portal at https://password.aalto.fi. Using the service requires identification with a banking ID or an ID card equipped with a chip issued by the Finnish police.

The activation can be done using personal email and mobile phone for verification if they are saved in HR or student system before, too.

 If you cannot use these authentication methods, please use the personal registration link in your activation email.

Activating the user ID at the customer service desk

You can activate the user ID by visiting the customer service desk of Aalto University’s IT Services Otaniemi or Töölö campus. Be prepared to authenticate your identity by showing an official ID, meaning a passport, Finnish ID card or Finnish driver's license.

User IDs for those without an employment contract

Civilian servicemen, unpaid interns and people receiving fees are not automatically assigned a user ID. A separate application for an ID must be submitted by using the Visitor’s personal details form. Emeritus Professors can apply for an Aalto user ID and emailbox through their own department, because the departments know what kinds of rights they need.

  1. The Visitor’s personal details form is available on Inside page, at item Forms - HR , and it can also be collected from a service desk.
  2. Complete and sign the form, and return it to the contact person of the department or unit. The contact person adds their own details to the form and makes sure that the form has been completed correctly. The head of department signs the form and specifies the period of time for which the Aalto user ID is granted (max. 3 years). The contact person sends the form to the person responsible for payroll at the department, to be registered in the personal data system, after which the Aalto digital identity is created automatically and the visitor will receive an invitation to active their identity.
  3. The person can activate the user ID in the self-service portal at: https://password.aalto.fi or at the customer service desk of Aalto University’s IT Services.
